Somerville is pleased to be able to offer undergraduates the opportunity of applying for a Margaret Irene Seymour Music Award.
The award, which may be valued at between £50 and £400 p.a. is open to ALL undergraduates, whether reading music or not. The holder will be expected to put the money toward instrumental or vocal tuition and to play a full part in the music-making in College, including participation in College concerts, and organizing, in collaboration with the SMS, an annual concert for all music award-holders in College. Candidates who already receive substantial College funding for their instrument/voice may be eligible for a titular award.
Auditions will take place in the College Chapel. Applicants will be required to offer a programme of up to ten minutes duration, using their own accompanist(s) if necessary, on the instrument or voice on which they will spend the award. The recital will be presented to the Music Lecturer and Fellow with Responsibility for Music, together with others expert in the field if required, who will act as adjudicators.
Application procedure:
Students wishing to apply should contact Paul Francis, the Treasury & Project Administrator, by Monday of 5th week MT (11th November 2013) to register their interest in applying for the award.
Auditions will be timetabled for the afternoon of the Thursday of 6th week MT (21st November 2013);
The adjudicators will make recommendations to Education Committee in 7th week MT (27th November 2013);
Applicants will be notified whether they have been successful or not.
Payment to those who have been successful will be made direct to the student as soon as possible.
Each award-holder will be required to submit a report detailing their use of the money and their contribution to College music-making by 4th week TT14. The adjudicators will then make a recommendation to Education Committee as to whether the award should be continued for a further year.
